وقد اعتنى الأئمة على مرِّ العصور بخدمته؛ شرحاً واختصاراً وغير ذلك. فهو أصح ما دوِّن بعد كتاب الله عزَّ وجلَّ؛ فهو مبارك عظيم النفع حساً ومعنىً؛ كما نقل الإمام الزبيدي في مقدمته: (قال لي من لقيته من القضاة الذين كان لهم المعرفة والرحلة، عمَّن لقي من السادة المقرِّ لهم بالفضل:إنَّ كتاب البخاريِّ ما قرىء في وقت شدةٍ إلا فرجت، ولا ركب في مركب فغرقت قطٌّ).
